MoVal Robotics Program Currently Ranks 1st Place in California — They’re Geared for Greatness!
When it comes to building future engineers and programmers, MoVal Robotics is proving they’ve got the nuts, bolts, and brains to lead the charge. This after-school program at Moreno Valley High School (MVHS) ranks 1st place in the entire state of California, demonstrating their circuits are wired for success. With one more meet ahead—January 18th—there’s plenty of opportunity to climb even higher in the rankings. From design and strategy to teamwork and problem-solving, these students have mastered the art of robotic excellence—all while having a byte of fun along the way!
What Does It Take to Compete?
Each season kicks off with a fresh challenge, sparking creativity and innovation. Students roll up their sleeves to design, build, and program a robot that can complete tasks and score points on the competition field. Alongside robot construction, they strategize for the year’s unique game. League meets focus on scoring points with the robot, while tournaments also include judging components where teams can earn awards based on design, engineering, collaboration, and innovation. Between competitions, the team refines their robot, improves its efficiency, and sharpens their driving skills—proof that practice makes perfect.
More Than Robots
While the robots take center stage, the program builds more than just machines. “Robotics builds students’ ability to work as a team, collaborate with other teams, and develop self-esteem,” shared the team’s dedicated instructor. Students gain invaluable experience in mechanical and electrical engineering and programming, but the biggest win is their glimpse into the engineering industry and the confidence they gain in shaping their futures.
The greatest moments often happen behind the scenes: watching students overcome challenges, develop confidence, and support each other. Robotics has a knack for transforming students into problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders.
The program’s impact is undeniable. “I’ve seen students who once didn’t think they’d go to college now pursuing degrees in Mechanical Engineering,” said Richard MacPherson Robotics Advisor. “Every small and large task they accomplish, on and off the field, makes me beam with pride.”
Skills That Spark Success
Teamwork, problem-solving, and gracious professionalism are the cornerstones of the MoVal Robotics program. Students learn by doing, gaining hands-on training, and developing both technical and soft skills. From troubleshooting mechanical issues to collaborating with teammates and other schools, the experience prepares them for future challenges—robotic and otherwise.
Join the Fun, No Experience Necessary
Curious about joining the ranks of this elite squad of robot creators? MoVal Robotics is open to all students at MVHS, no prior experience or tryouts required. The program’s motto might as well be, “Come as you are, leave as a roboticist.” Meetings are held after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, though the team kicks into overdrive during competition season (October to February) with daily sessions. Interested students just need to show up and plug into the action—seasoned team members will teach the ropes (and the wires, gears, and coding, too).
MVHS Robotics Award History
MoVal Robotics’ started in 2019-2020 and their impact was immediate. They took second place at a regional competition in their inaugural year and were set to go to the World Championships before COVID-19 hit the brakes. Since then, the team has consistently achieved high rankings and earned prestigious awards every year—talk about keeping the momentum rolling!
