Child Find

Child Find, required by Federal and State statutes, is designed to actively and systemically seek out all individuals who reside in the District, from birth through the age of twenty-two, who are suspected to be in need of special education and related services.

Parents, agencies, appropriate professional persons, and other members of the public may refer children, including homeless children, wards of the state, and children attending religious and private schools, who are suspected to having a disability, for assessment to determine eligibility as a student in need of special education and related services.

To initiate this referral:

  • For school-age students please contact the Special Education Department at (951) 571-7500
  • For infants through age 4, contact Rainbow Springs Preschool office at (951) 571-4710.

Staff will complete a referral form and then forward the request to appropriate staff within the District to conduct the assessment.  The assessment staff will contact the parent to discuss the concerns leading to the referral, background information and securing the parent's signature for assessment.  Procedural Safeguards will be shared with the parent at this time.  Within sixty (60) days from the date of the parent signing the assessment plan, the assessment team (Individualized Educational Program team) will meet with the parent to discuss their findings, determine eligibility for special education and related services (per state regulations), and determine educational placement.

Please contact the Special Education Department or Rainbow Springs Preschool for additional information.
