Student Board Member Requirements 

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Sophomores are eligible to apply and if selected, may only participate in one year of service as a student board intern.
• Maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA), submit unofficial transcripts
• Complete the application including two (2) letters of recommendation (from a teacher/counselor AND your high school principal) and written responses 
• Interested applicants must advocate for student voice in the decision-making process and demonstrate the qualities of a student leader, such as:
  • Professional/Mature 
  • Problem Solver
  • Critical Thinker 
  • Responsible
  • Collaboration 
  • Creative 
  • Articulate 

In the Spring of students’ 10th grade year, applications for the Student Board Member Internship Program will open. From this application pool, one student candidate will be selected and during their 11th grade year, the candidate student board member shall have fulfilled the following:

During Semester 1:

• Visit one school per month
• Attend one district event
• Interview at least five students of different grade levels (can be done at their site visit in combination with the district event). There is a form to be completed for each interview.

During Semesters 1 and 2:

• Shadow the senior student board member at two board meetings twice a semester
• If the candidate in the Student Board Member Internship Program is not successful after semester one, the board can elect a “runner up” from the application pool and they must complete the program during semester two

Student Board Members will be part of the Superintendent's Student Leadership Advisory Council.

Serving on the School Board as a Student Board Member has similar requirements as other MVUSD extracurricular and co-curricular activities. Per CA Education Code, Student Board Members serve for one year, between July 1 and June 30 each academic year.

Student Board member will sit on the dais and will present the Student School Report and vote on items. While they will have a preferential vote on the Board of Education's agenda, Student Board member will not participate in Closed Sessions, nor will their preferential vote affect the final numerical outcome of a Board vote. Student Board member may make motions that the Board may act upon and are allowed to question speakers (items on the agenda) and discuss issues except on matters dealing with employer-employee relations or closed session.

Board meetings and study sessions begin at 5:00 p.m. All meetings are held in person, in the Board Room, at 25634 Alessandro Blvd., Moreno Valley, CA 92553. 

Serving as the voice of students’ district-wide, the position of Student Board Member requires a significant, dedicated commitment of time to:

• Prepare for and attend Board meetings and Study Sessions (public session); Responsible for reading all board meeting related materials.
• Student board members are expected and responsible for the coordination of school reports given at board meetings.
• Basic understanding of principles of good governance.
• Participate in peer inquiry and discussing issues.
• Basic understanding of The Brown Act, required to attend any CSBA (California School Boards Association) available training as soon as possible.
• Cast, prior to the official Board vote, preferential votes on all matters (except those subject to Closed Session).
• Must commit to attending meetings in person.
• Represent District students at Board-related events, including conferences and the annual CSBA Conference in December.
• Willing to share viewpoints, both to the Board, to all students and to the public at large.
• Must be willing to dress professionally at Board meetings and at all events where the Student Board Member is there in an official capacity.
• Must be willing to look beyond one’s own school and its needs, see students and the district as a whole. Must put aside one's own "school spirit" for "district spirit" while representing the Board.
• Must speak on behalf of ALL students.
• At the end of each student board member term a discussion should take place over the application process.
• Must be willing to prepare for school board meetings by knowing the issues and preparing individual comments.
