Edgemont Elementary School will debut its new look for students on Monday when school returns to the $30 million building. Moreno Valley High School's new 30-classroom building will also open on Monday.

Teachers, administration and district maintenance staff have been working over the winter break to ensure both Edgemont and Moreno Valley High School are prepared for students on Monday.

The project at Edgemont replaced the oldest school building in the district and is about 20,000 square feet larger than the previous school. Work on athletic fields and some playground equipment will continue before the project is fully complete later this spring.

The new two-story wing at Moreno Valley High School will allow 30 classrooms to relocate from portable classrooms on the campus.

"We are thrilled to be providing the students at Edgemont a stunning 21st-century building that will support strong learning for years to come," said Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora.

"Edgemont Elementary's new building is a point of pride for the community, the school board is proud of MVUSD's commitment to making our schools places children want to come each day," said School Board President Susan Smith.

Equity Institute will build MVUSD employee cultural proficiency

The Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) is bringing its Equity Institute to Moreno Valley for MVUSD employees beginning next week. The 5-day professional development experience is designed to build cultural proficiency capacity so employees can lead for equity. The program, for all educational levels, will build systems of understanding that will empower employees to be proactive and responsive to the diverse needs those they serve.

Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora selected ten schools to participate: Bear Valley Elementary, Butterfield Elementary, Cloverdale Elementary, Hendrick Ranch Elementary, Ridgecrest Elementary, Landmark MIddle, Sunnymead Middle, Palm Middle, Moreno Valley High and Valley View High. More schools will be added in future programs.

Themes discussed will include equity, culture, community responsiveness, and disrupting patterns of inequity. The institute will provide a deeper focus on race/ethnicity through a culturally proficient lens.

The institute will be January 12, February 9, March 16, April 13 and April 27 from 8:30 am to 3:30 p.m. in the District Office Board Room.
