The Governor has signed into law, SB 1381( Simitian), which would roll-back from December 2 to September 1, the age by which kindergarten students must reach five years of age to be eligible for kindergarten admission.  The bill phases back the deadline on month at a time over three years, beginning in the 2012-13 school year.  It also requires LEAs to provide a "transitional kindergarten" program to students excluded due to the earlier deadlines.

  • Moves back the date by which a child is required to reach age five prior to admission to kindergarten.
  • Phases the date rollback in over three years, moving the current December 2 deadline back to November 1 for the 2012-13 school year, to October 1 for the 2013-14 school year, and finally to September 1 for the 2014-15 school year, and each year thereafter.
