Two Vista del Lago students win Martin Luther King, Jr. essay contest

Jared Kern and Jordan Ogbu-Felix, both juniors at Vista del Lago High School, were awarded scholarships earlier today during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast, sponsored by Moreno Valley College and MVUSD. Students were prompted to research and write essays based on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Don’t Sleep Through the Revolution” lecture, as part of the scholarship competition. Student essays identified a social issue from King and examined how the issue still exists today.

Jared is involved in the Debate Team, Creative Writers Club and the cross country team at Vista del Lago High School. Jordan participates in the Upward Bound Math and Science Program, Black Student Union, National Honors Society and Friday Night Live Club.

The winners received $500 scholarships during the breakfast ceremony at the Moreno Valley Conference Center. Students from Moreno Valley and Val Verde Unified School Districts participated in the competition.

Rev. Charles Lee-Johnson, pastor of Corona Community Church, delivered a keynote address during the fifth-annual breakfast and Woodie Rucker-Hughes, a long-time educator and activist, was awarded MVC's Community Legacy Award. A step team performance from X-Clusive Step Team with students from Valley View High School and Rancho Verde High School also highlighted the event.

Congratulations to Jared and Jordan!
