A Compact for Establishing Rights, Responsibilities and Respect in the School Community
Introduction:
The Compact of the Moreno Valley Unified School District is based on the California 3Rs Project which emphasizes rights, responsibilities and respect for the individual. This Compact is founded on the premise that all the adults of the greater school community must commit to model behavior appropriate in a diverse society.
Preamble:
The Board of Education of the Moreno Valley Unified School District hereby adopts this Compact which reaffirms a shared commitment to the principles of dignity for the individual and respect for the diversity of the community. It reinforces the need for a civic framework that guides district efforts in working effectively with community. Toward this end, we support this Compact which sets forth principles for addressing conflict in public education.
Principles:
Rights: All members of this diverse community have an inalienable right to constructive expression as a forum for determining educational opportunities for all students.
Responsibilities: Each stakeholder of the educational community has the responsibility to value, appreciate and protect the views and ideas of others as they want them safeguarded for themselves.
Respect: Each member of the educational community must recognize that debate and disagreement are vital in a democracy. However, debate and disagreement can be framed in the context of mutual respect for the opinion of others. How we debate is as important as what we debate.
Because we embrace these principles, we will not:
- Tolerate prejudicial discrimination
- Tolerate harassment or others behaviors that demean the dignity of any individual or group.
- Tolerate behavior or conditions that threaten or endanger anyone.
- Tolerate behavior or conditions that hinder the educational process.
Goal:
Our goal is to enable people of all backgrounds, cultures, religions and personal convictions to treat one another with mutual respect. To do so demonstrates the importance of civility and respect to our students who trust us and look to us for leadership and direction.
