The Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) believes that all students are entitled to receive the benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program. School counselors are a vital link to academic, career, and personal social development for all students at all grade levels. Working in collaboration with other educational programs in schools, credentialed school counselors ensure equity and access to programs and services so that every student is challenged and supported to achieve his/her highest potential.
In 1998, the District adopted the American School Counselor Association National Standards for School Counseling Programs, which addresses the academic, career, and personal/social (life skills) needs of students. All school counseling staff have been trained in the National Standards and have spent the last four years designing curriculum, programs and services that assist students in learning the knowledge and skills necessary for success. Counselors are also measuring the results of their programs and have had many successes. School counselors advocate for the needs of students by providing guidance and support to maximize student's potential and academic achievement. In partnership with other educators, parents, and the community, credentialed school counselors facilitate the support system to ensure that all students in the MVUSD are prepared academically and socially with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute at the highest level as productive members of society. School Counselors at all levels provide support for students through classroom guidance lessons, group counseling session, individual counseling sessions, consultation with parents and teachers and through collaboration with community resources. Counseling guidance lessons taught by school counselors in the classroom are intended to give students the knowledge, skills and attitudes that lead to academic, career and personal / social development. With the District's support and adoption of the National School Counseling Standards, counselors at the secondary level have redesigned their programs to provide more direct services to students so that less time is spent in clerical and administrative functions.
