The Professional Development Program is designed to support staff throughout the district in implementing the district academic standards and core curriculum. Emphasis is placed on the areas of literacy, mathematics and in enhancing instructional strategies to assist all students in succeeding. Training is provided at the district level as well as site level.

Support is provided for academic standards and textbook adoption cycles. Assistance is provided for the implementation of curriculum and instructional materials aligned to academic standards.  Training is also available for District adopted intervention programs.

A current schedule of district level trainings is posted on the annual Staff Development Calendar located on the Professional Development SharePoint site.

District Staff Development Specialists provide professional development in the areas
of Language Arts, Mathematics, Special Education, Approved Intervention Programs and English Language Development. In addition to presenting workshops and seminars, they provide support to individual schools and/or teachers in designing programs, analyzing data, classroom management strategies, and implementing the adopted core curriculum. Through analysis of student achievement data each year, a comprehensive staff development program is developed with the ultimate goal of helping students succeed.

All administrators attend AB 430 Modules (1 through 3) to provide them with in-depth knowledge of the core curriculum, leadership skills and technology training. English Language Authorization requirements are provided by  personnel as well as through cooperative programs with local universities. This training assists staff in meeting the needs of English learners. The Information Systems department provides ongoing computer and technology courses which are available to all district employees.

Site level collaboration within departments and grade levels also enables teachers to learn from one another and improve instructional strategies to increase student achievement.

All kindergarten through third grade teachers receive training in the areas of literacy, math, English language development, special education, and classroom management as part of the district staff development program for class-size reduction.  As part of the District’s comprehensive New Teacher Induction program, New Teacher Orientation training is provided on classroom management, district standards and use of the core curriculum. Through the RIMS-Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Program (BTSA), and Intern program, mentor teachers provide new teachers with ongoing support and assistance.

Various departments in MVUSD provide staff development.  For example, the Special Education department provides professional development opportunities throughout the year for certificated and classified employees to assist them in meeting the needs of Special Education students. Ongoing opportunities for peer collaboration assist staff in implementing methods and strategies to meet the needs of our Special Education students. Through the Safe and Drug Free Schools program, courses are provided for the “Too Good for Drugs”, “Too Good for Violence”, “Toward No Drug Abuse” and “Project Alert” programs.  Student Services may be contacted at extension 17630 for more information regarding the programs listed above.

Professional Staff development is planned at each individual school according to the needs identified in the school’s Single Site Plan for Student Achievement. Using data regarding student learning, together with the knowledge of students’ learning styles and needs, an individual school determines the focus for its own professional development.

Opportunities are provided for school leadership teams to attend training at the Riverside County Office of Education and district administrators to attend training in the district and at the county level. Parents and community members are invited to attend staff development activities.

The district is dedicated to recruiting and training highly qualified staff. Incentives are provided to assist teachers and instructional assistants in meeting the certification and training requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind legislation.
Our goal is to empower teachers and other school personnel with the knowledge, skills and abilities which will enable them to assist all students in being successful.

RIMS - Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Program (BTSA)

The goal of RIMS-BTSA is to support and mentor participating beginning teachers during the induction period of their professional development. RIMS-BTSA is a four-county consortium consisting of the Riverside County Office of  Education; Inyo County Office of Education; Mono County Office of Education; San Bernardino  County Superintendent of Schools Office; California  State University, San Bernardino; the University of California, Riverside; and participating  school districts. Each BTSA Support Provider supports two to three beginning teachers through professional growth conferencing, visiting, and observing in the classroom, individualized coaching of teaching strategies and engaging in demonstration teaching. Through this integrated system of support and assessment, participating teachers are provided with an array of professional development opportunities to develop self-confidence and professional expertise. Through this process new teachers are able to clear their preliminary credential.

Peer Assistance and Review (PAR)
The PAR program is available to assist tenured teachers who are referred due to an unsatisfactory performance evaluation or who volunteer for assistance. A Specialist works with participants to improve instructional skills, classroom management, knowledge of subject matter, or related aspects of the teaching profession. Tenured teachers may volunteer for assistance by sending a written request to the coordinator of Professional Development.
