MVUSD Addresses Budget Concerns

Monday, March 5, 2009

MORENO VALLEY - On February 20, 2009, Governor Schwarzenegger signed legislation passed by the California Senate and Assembly which approved a $40 billion budget bailout package. The budget cuts $8.6 billion from education over the next two years - 2008-09 and 2009-10.

This massive reduction in California’s state education funding will result in a $23 million dollar deficit for Moreno Valley Unified during the 2009-2010 school year. Despite staff’s vigilant efforts to cut the District’s budget the past 12 months, additional employment and programmatic cuts are likely to occur.

Each of you is a valued component of this District. Now, more than ever, your individual contributions to ensure our students continue receiving a high-quality education is a top priority for us all. To seek input and provide information, three community meetings have been scheduled. The meeting dates and locations are:

Tuesday    March 3    10 a.m.    Community Education Center Board Room

Thursday     March 5    4 p.m.    Community Education Center Board Room

Tuesday    March 10    7 p.m.    Community Education Center Board Room

To assist with these impending decisions, District staff is providing suggestions to balance the budget. In addition to various stakeholder budget committees, the opinions of community members and parents to effectively reduce the budget will be sought.

In this venture, written and electronic notices have been sent to Parent Teacher Association district and site organizations, school site councils and the executive council of DELAC and site ELAC groups asking for input. The notice will direct interested parties to send suggestions regarding the economic issues facing the District to the Superintendent’s Office or via email to MVUSDBudgetConcerns@mvusd.net. This information will also be made available on the District’s website, www.mvusd.net.

Appropriate suggestions for mid-year cuts in 2009 will subsequently be provided to the Board of Education.
