Canyon Springs Names Head Football Coach

Monday, August 4, 2008

MORENO VALLEY – Canyon Springs High School has hired Lance Pfeiffer to become its head football coach. Pfeiffer, who was a Cougar assistant the past two seasons, is accepting his first head varsity coaching position.

The 37-year-old Pfeiffer replaces Rich Bancroft as the Cougars’ head coach.

The past two seasons, Canyon Springs has posted 16 victories and advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Central Division semifinals in each campaign. In 2007, the Cougars reached the championship falling to Ontario Colony. Canyon Springs also earned a share of the Inland Valley League football title last season with a 3-1 league mark.

Prior to arriving at Canyon Springs, Pfeiffer was the special teams coordinator and receivers coach at Citrus Hill High School in 2005 and an assistant coach at Vista Del Lago High School in 2004. From 1996 through 2001, he was an assistant coach at Riverside Notre Dame High School. Pfeiffer has helped lead teams to four separate league titles and five CIF-SS appearances.

Pfeiffer is the son of long-time area football coach Hal Pfeiffer, who helped lead Canyon Springs to the school’s first CIF crown in 1988.

Pfeiffer earned his Bachelor of Kinesiology from Cal State University San Bernardino and his Masters of Kinesiology from Cal Baptist University. He has taught in the Moreno Valley Unified School District since 1999 as a physical education teacher at Sunnymead and Badger Springs Middle Schools before accepting a position at Canyon Springs for the 2008-09 academic year.

Canyon Springs will open the 2008 season on September 12 versus Rancho Cucamonga at Moreno Valley’s Rooney Field. The Inland Valley League expands to eight teams this season with the additions of La Sierra, Arlington and Ramona High Schools. In addition to Canyon Springs, the league already consisted of Moreno Valley, Valley View, Vista del Lago and Rancho Verde High Schools.
